Other towns which celebrate San Isidro include Santa Elena in Jaen, and Alameda in Malaga; also, see Villafranca de Cordoba, above.
30 MAY
DIA SAN FERNANDO
SEVILLA

El Rey Fernando III, King of Castile, Galicia and Leon, was the “saviour” of Seville, capturing the city (after Ubeda, Cordoba and Jaen) from the Moors in 1248. San Fernando is buried in Seville cathedral, in the Capilla Virgen de los Reyes (Virgin of the Kings Chapel), where his body is on show on this festive day.

25 – 28 MAY
HUELVA
EL ROCIO

This pilgrimage sees hermandades coming from towns and cities all over Spain, but especially Sevilla and Huelva provinces in Andalucia, in gypsy wagons pulled by oxen. They meet in a small town and party hard – drinking, dancing, socialising – all day and night. The highlight is when the Virgen del Rocio is brought out of her church on Sunday.

My wife developed a fear of flying after severe turbulence on a flight last year and she now refuses to fly. However, we both love Spain and used to travel there regularly. Is there a practical way of travelling between Britain and Spain without flying, and without breaking the bank?

Mark Smith is the ‘Man in Seat61′, a specialist in rail travel worldwide, and founder of www.seat61.com.

He replies:

There are several affordable and enjoyable ways to reach Spain overland, most of them worth considering even for those who are unafraid of flying.

The easiest option is to take an afternoon Eurostar service to Paris, then one of the two Spanish Trainhotel sleeper trains from Paris to Spain (one goes to Madrid, the other to Barcelona). For example, a 3pm Eurostar from St Pancras reaches Paris Gare du Nord just after 6pm French time. Then the Trainhotel “Joan Miro” leaves Paris Gare d’Austerlitz at around 8.30pm and will get you to central Barcelona before 8.30am the following morning.

A Eurostar ticket to Paris starts at £69 return (but will often be more), while a bed in a tourist-class four-berth sleeper on the Trainhotel to Barcelona or Madrid starts at £67 one way.

However, if you can afford it I’d suggest treating yourself to a “gran clase” two-berth sleeper with private lavatory and shower, which starts at £149 per person each way, including a three-course meal with wine and delicious Spanish cava in the restaurant car, plus breakfast next morning. A morning arrival may save on your hotel bill, too.

You can book Eurostar and Trainhotel at www.raileurope.co.uk or call 0844 848 5848.

Another option is cruising to Spain by ferry. Brittany Ferries (0871 244 0744; www.brittany-ferries.co.uk) sails several times a week for most of the year from both Plymouth and Portsmouth to Santander in northern Spain, and from Portsmouth to Bilbao. These ships have more in common with cruise liners than Channel ferries of old, with restaurants, bars, cabins with ensuite bathrooms and on-board entertainment. A return trip to Spain for two, sharing a two-bed cabin with shower and lavatory, starts at £286.

Finally, a new way to reach Spain opens for business later this year. On December 12, the first part of the new Perpignan-Barcelona high-speed line enters service, and two daily double-deck TGVs (Train à Grande Vitesse, the 186mph French high-speed train) will link Paris with Figueres, just north of Barcelona and home to the remarkable Salvador Dalí museum.

You’ll be able to leave London on a 10.25am Eurostar, change in Paris onto the 3.20pm TGV for Figueres, arriving at 8.46pm the same day. Fares for this new train have yet to be announced, but as an informed guess I’d expect it to cost from £69 return for the Eurostar plus from around £35 each way for the TGV.

Ask for a top-deck seat for the best views as the train speeds along the Rhône Valley. You’ll be able to book this service through Rail Europe on the website or phone number given above.

Fancy Something different?

Take a look athese topical pictures about a beautiful place called the Camino del rey ( also known as the Caminito Del Rey ) The small road of the king!! This is literally a 45 minute drive from Sunny Villa Spain, and one of my favourite areas in southern Spain. If you are a Movie Buff, or like me has a historical interest in the 2nd world war and its movies, the bridge in the photographs is where they filmed the final scenes of the film “Von Ryan’s Express” starring Frank Sinatra and Trevor Howard. If you read the stories on our website you may have already read that the local villagers who are now about 95 years old, that told me that Frank Sinatra and Trevor Howard actually came to our piece of land to admire the view, so Frank Sinatra has stood where Sunny Villa is today!!

Marbella is, without a doubt, one of the Costa del Sol’s major tourist centres, thanks to the high quality of the facilities and services it provides. Puerto Banús, one of the main focal points for tourists in the town, houses an exclusive leisure area inside the excellent facilities of its marina. But Marbella is also a paradise for golf lovers. A dozen magnificent courses allow the golfer to play the sport before the unusual backdrop provided by the sea and the mountains. The historic part of town, sitting on a beautiful bay, shelters lovely corners of a typically Andalusian flavour, with whitewashed houses and orange trees adorning the streets and squares. An ideal setting for sampling any one of the tasty recipes of the local cuisine. Read more

Guaro is a lovely white village on the edge of the Sierra de las Nieves natural park and 20mins walk from Sunny Villa .

Thanks to its elevated position, at over 350 metres above sea level, the village offers privileged views across the surrounding countryside. Some of the best vistas are from its 16th century church of San Miguel, found at the top of the village’s narrow, winding streets.

ALMONDS & OLIVES

Historically the area was a noted producer of almonds, with until recent times a village factory making cakes and biscuits from locally produced almonds. Although the factory has now closed, local artisan almond products such as cakes and nougat are still available; and the almond trees remain, covering the countryside with a sea of white and delicate pink blossoms each spring.

Olive growing remains an important part of the local economy and Guaro has an up to date co-operative olive oil mill where local producers have their harvests pressed.

Increasingly the village is also used as an eastern base for access to the Sierra de las Nieves natural park, for nature hiking and adventure activities.

FESTIVAL DE LA LUNA MORA

Like many of the white villages of Andalucía, Guaro dates back to the Arabic occupation of Spain. The small community of some 2,500 people keeps its Moorish history very much alive with the annual ‘Festival de la Luna Mora’ or Festival of the Moorish Moon.

Held between the middle two weekends of each September, this arts, crafts and music festival has grown from a humble celebration into a significant event playing host to local, national and international talent. More>

Artists from the fields of classical, popular and flamenco music and dance offer concerts in the village’s purpose built, open-air amphitheatre. Past performers have included internationally acclaimed classical guitarist Paco de Lucía; contemporary flamenco/pop singer Diana Navarro; and Malaga-born pop singer Pablo Alborán. Throughout the evenings of the ten day festival there is a Moorish style street souk, and the entire village is illuminated by over 20,000 candles.

ROMERIA

Each July the village celebrates its annual pilgrimage parade or ‘Romeria’ terminating at the tiny chapel of ‘Ermita del Santuario del Puerto’.

A state of balance has thus been reached between the needs of contemporary life and the traditions of an eminently agricultural and therefore slow-paced village. This territory sprawls out gently among hills whose altitude varies between 200 and 500 metres and that are covered mainly by olive and almond trees and low brush, with groves of cork oaks here and there where the terrain is not suitable for crops. The landscape has an unmistakably agricultural flavour but is nevertheless compatible with the installation of new cultural and leisure facilities. Remains discovered in the area of Ardite show that the first settlements in these lands occurred in prehistoric times, and there is also evidence of the Roman imprint at Cerro del Polvillar. The village was founded by the Arabs, however, at a date that has not been determined with certainty. The Muslims first settled at Guaro Viejo (Old Guaro) and shortly afterward at present-day Guaro. It received the designation of “villa” (royal burgh) by decree of Felipe IV in 1614. Some years later, in 1648, this king wished to pay for certain services performed for the crown by Juan Chumacero Sotomayor Carrillo de la Vega, so the villa of Guaro was converted to a county and that person became its first Count.
